Information for Visa/ Internationalisation Register Students

Attendance Policy:

Visa students who attend a course at Kenilworth for more than 12 weeks are obliged to have an attendance rate of greater than 85%. If a student is splitting their 25-week study period up into two study periods of 12/13 weeks, separated by a holiday, the students must attend at least 85% of classes during both 12/13 Week periods.

If a student is failing to attend a sufficient number of classes, the student is contacted/spoken to, and reminded of their obligation to attend 85% of their classes under GNIB regulations.

If the student continues to stay away from class, they will receive an official letter of warning from the school.

As a student approaches the point in their course where it’s impossible for them to attain 85% attendance, they will then receive a Final Official Letter of Warning.

Once the 85% cut off mark is passed, the student will be informed that they are being immediately removed from the school register. They will not be able to renew or extend their study period. Kenilworth attendance letters are only given to students who satisfy the 85% attendance regulation.

If there are mitigating circumstances, students may appeal their removal from the school register and request a meeting with the School Director.  This meeting will be attended by a second member of Kenilworth staff, normally the Director of Studies or Office Administrator. Kenilworth will present the student with a copy of the three recorded warnings and their Attendance Record.  The student will have an opportunity to make their case, for example, an illness with the requisite doctor’s note or compassionate leave.  Any judgement will be made in coherence with Kenilworth’s stated principles regarding attendance and in strict accordance with the regulations from the GNIB regarding visa students.  If in doubt, we will contact the GNIB and seek clarification.

Exit Exam

Students who register for a course of 12 weeks must register for a recognised external exit exam.  The exams offered include TIE, IELTS, TOEFL or one of the Cambridge exams.

Students are encouraged to speak to their teachers or the DOS about what exam would be best for them.  Information on all the different exams is available in our school.

Any student applying for an extension of their study visa must show written proof of registering for an external exit exam to satisfy the regulations of the Immigration Office.

Holidays:

Students are required to take the first twelve-week block of classes without a break. The educational philosophy behind this is that our General English Courses are organised on the basis of a 12 Week Syllabus and visa students will often be blended into these courses alongside shorter term students.

After a 12 Week period, visa students may take a holiday if they wish in agreement with the Director and Director of Studies. After their break, they will then complete the second set of classes also in a single block.

They can also finish all their classes in a single block of 25 weeks.  This does not include Christmas holidays when the school shuts for two weeks.
